Event Details

            We have pulled out all the stops for a unique evening of Elderton Wines from the Barossa Valley. Elderton Wines is a small, family owned and operated winery, situated in the heart of the Barossa Valley. The Elderton vineyard which was planted in 1904 by Samuel Elderton Tolley, was purchased by the Ashmead family in the late 1970's and started producing labelled bottled estate wine from the 1982 harvest.

It was well after a decade of hard work and toil that the winery shot to prominence in the early 1990's, after winning the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy at the 1993 Melbourne Wine Show. There has been an amazing amount of further wine show success including the World’s Best Shiraz Trophy at the 2000 London International Wine & Spirits Competition. Elderton has also enjoyed being the darling of the worlds wine press, with great endorsements given by James Halliday, Robert Parker Jnr. (RP), The Wine Spectator, as well as countless others. Furthermore, in 2005, Elderton was named in the Top 100 Wineries in the World by Wine & Spirit Magazine.

Alex Patinios, of Dionysus Brands Inc., Agent for Elderton Wines in Ontario, will lead this tasting. He has known the Ashmead family for many years, and will take us through this exclusive AWS event, one that you certainly do not want to miss. Here’s the line up;

2004 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Barossa Valley, Gold Medal Winner, Brussels Wine Show

2003 Friends Cabernet Sauvignon, Eden Valley

2005 Friends Cabernet Sauvignon, Eden Valley

2005 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, (90 Points RP)

2004 Shiraz, (90 Points RP)

2003 Command Single Vineyard Shiraz, 94 Points (RP)

2005 Ashmead Family Shiraz

2005 Friends Shiraz, Eden Valley

From a local point of view, Michael Vaughan (Vintage Assessments) has given a recommendation for the first and last wines listed overleaf, with a Best Buy for the 2004 Shiraz and for the Command, he gave three stars and describes it as “excellent accessible”.

We are returning to the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club and with these high-end wines we expect a sell-out event. We recommend reserving early. An Elderton white wine will be served at the reception starting at 6:30 p.m. There will be a small personal plate of veal, pork and beef sliders and cheeses served with the wines.

Australian Wine Society of Toronto

The Australian Wine Society (AWS) of Toronto is a not-for-profit organization devoted to the enjoyment of Australian wines. Through exposure to, and education about the wines and wine regions of Australia, the Society seeks to encourage a greater awareness of the wine varietals, the diversity and the styles of Aussie wines, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The opportunity to try a wide range of wines makes it easier for members to decide what types they might want to purchase through wine agents, the LCBO, Vintages monthly releases and the Classics Catalogue.
